SCRIPT
Open on – cartoon Father Christmas.
PRESENTER (V.O)
Will Father Christmas bring you everything you want this Christmas?
CUT TO:
White surface – items appear in frame.
PRESENTER (V.O)
Or will you, as in previous years, find an ill-fitting jumper, three copies of the same bestseller and a pair of novelty cufflinks sitting under the Christmas tree instead?
CUT TO:
EXTRA sitting by a tree looking miserable.
PRESENTER
Unwanted presents are as much a part of Christmas as drunken family feuds.
CUT TO:
Mock family feud.
CUT TO:
GREEN SCREEN – facts and figures swipe onto screen from left and right.
PRESENTER (V.O)
Research by moneysupermarket.com, the price comparison service, suggests that four out of five people will unwrap presents they don't need or like this year and on average these unwanted presents cost £72.
PRESENTER
A separate survey by online transaction company, Paypal, suggests that we spent a total of £8bn on Christmas presents last year - but more than £78m worth were returned by the new-year.
CUT TO:
CU - Presenter stands facing camera.
PRESENTER
So how do we cash in on the crap rather than standing in customer service lines all day for a re-fund?
CHANGE ANGLE – WIDER SHOT – presenter is shown standing in a line of PEOPLE looking at their watches and shaking their heads, frustrated and generally bored.
PRESENTER (V.O)
One word...
PRESENTER
...eBay.
CUT TO:
Shots from eBay site.
PRESENTER (V.O)
Getting some money for your unwanted presents is now much easier, thanks to the popularity of eBay. The auction site has even come up with a new term to make you feel better about such a course of action.
CUT TO:
Dodgy DEL BOY character exchanges gift for a handful of cash with an equally dodgy character.
CUT TO:
PRESENTER (V.O)
Rather than flogging your gifts to the highest bidder, you are merely “re-homing" them.
EXTRA places new item on mantel.
CUT TO:
Numbers going up – (GREEN SCREEN)
PRESENTER (V.O)
Not surprisingly, there is usually an increase in sellers after the Christmas period.
CUT TO:
PRESENTER against Christmas background.
PRESENTER
So if you want to shift your items for the best price, it can help to take note of eBay's "selling tips".
CUT TO:
Shot of item page on eBay.
PRESENTER (V.O)
Goods are more likely to sell if there is a simple, clear description of the item accompanied by a photograph.
PRESENTER
Although eBay is the biggest online auctioneer, it isn't the only site allowing people to sell unwanted gifts.
CUT TO:
SHOT taken from AMAZON.CO.uk
PRESENTER (V.O)
Amazon offers a similar service for used DVDs, books and other goods. It charges a fee of 17 per cent of the sale price. However, this isn't an auction; sellers set their price and then see whether there are any takers.
CUT TO:
PRESENTER
There are also a number of local auction sites such as London-based gumtree.com.
CUT TO:
EXTRA standing next to a bigger item – like a car, looking confused.
PRESENTER (V.O)
These could be useful for anyone selling bigger items who need to find a local buyer that could collect.
