Research by moneysupermarket.com, the price comparison service, suggests that four out of five people will unwrap presents they don't need or like this year and on average these unwanted presents cost £72.

A separate survey by online transaction company, Paypal, suggests that we spent a total of £8bn on Christmas presents last year - but more than £78m worth were returned by the new-year.
